Deffinition:

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive, degenerative disorder that attacks the brain’s nerve cells, or neurons, resulting in loss of memory, thinking and language skills, and behavioral changes.

Statistics:

  • It is estimated that Alzheimer’s disease currently affects 2.4 million to 4.5 million Americans.
  • It is projected that the number of Americans with Alzheimer’s disease could more than triple to 16 million by mid-century.
  • The incidence of the disease doubles every five years after age 65.
  • It is estimated that one to four family members act as caregivers for each individual with Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Although Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal part of aging, the risk of developing the illness rises with age. Current research from the National Institute on Aging indicates that the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease doubles every five years beyond age 65.

Risk Factors:

1. Age

2. Family History

3. Genetics

Diagnosis: Consult a doctor when you have concerns about memory loss, thinking skills and behavior changes in yourself or a loved one. There is no single test that proves a person has Alzheimer’s. The medical workup is designed to evaluate overall health and identify any conditions that could affect how well the mind works.Experts estimate a skilled physician can diagnose Alzheimer’s with more than 90 percent accuracy. Doctors can almost always determine that a person has dementia, but it may sometimes be difficult to pin down the exact cause.
